Attractions in Augusta, Maine
Maine State Museum
The Maine State Museum, adjacent to the State House, is 1.4 miles away from the Senator Inn and Spa. A popular attraction in Augusta, the collections of the Maine State Museum preserve and present the State's rich natural and human histories.
The strong geological collection began in the 1830's when systematic collecting was first undertaken in the region. The biological holdings include mounted specimens (especially Maine birds) and smaller groups including shells, eggs, and insects. The Maine-related archaeological and ethnographic collections include materials dating from the first Native Americans in the area (circa 12,000 BP).
The ethnographic holdings have large groups of crafts including baskets, basketmaking tools, beadwork, and birch bark objects, from small boxes to full sized canoes. The Historical collection covers all areas of human activities and is especially rich in the area of technology and the domestic and decorative arts.
The Maine State Museum also features technology holdings, Maine-related furniture, silver, pewter, and glass collections as well as textile, costume, and domestic life holdings.
Museum hours are Monday-Friday 9AM to 5PM, Saturday 10AM to 4PM and Sunday 1PM to 4PM. The Maine State Museum is closed on all State holidays. Admission is $2.00 for adults, $1.00 for children ages 6-18 and senior citizens, while children under 6 visit the Maine State Museum for free.
